Travel Check List

Three Months to go

One Month to go

  • If you have pets, demanding landscaping or plants, make sure you have a plan for them while you are away.  For example have a pet sitter or pet day care lined up, and the necessary care for other household related tasks that are typical of your routine.
  • Mail – Put a hold on your mail or make other arrangements so that it doesn’t pile up.  You can utilize the following tool from the USPS – USPS Tool.

Two Days to go

  • Have an easy welcome home meal (frozen pizza or entrée) ready for your return.
  • Touch base with pet / house sitter.
  • Email your itinerary to a friend or family member, or leave a copy with a neighbor.

Day Before Your Trip

  • Clean sheets – change them the night before you go, or strip them in the AM so your first night home will be in clean comfy sheets.  If you have the great trip we hope you will, you’ll want to get a good night sleep so you can get back to your routine.
  • Kitchen – get rid of any perishable food in fridge.
  • If you’re already packed, get a head start on packing the car early.
  • Confirm any details like flight times, and make sure you’ve got a printed copy of your full itinerary to bring with you.  Alternatively you can learn about some cool travel technology tools to go paperless here – Travel Apps To Keep You on Track.

Vacation Day

  • Trash out, stove off, windows closed.
  • Lights – if you have a sitter coming in, have them turn on certain lights to make it look like someone is home.
  • Appliances – all TV, alarm clocks, PC, monitor, modems, cable box, etc. should be turned off.
  • Heat and air conditioning should be set to off, or an ‘away’ setting.
  • Notify your security company and set your alarm if you use one.

Closing Thoughts

  • Take a few deep breaths and relax.  The prep work is finished.
  • ENJOY the excitement and anticipation of the good times to come
  • Have a wonderful vacation!
